Appreciation: 10/10
This is now my favorite zombie movie. Contrary to most people, I preferred it by far to the first 2 (Night of the living dead, Dawn of the dead) of the trilogy. Even though Dawn was entertaining, i fail to see how it could advantageously compare to this one.
Yes it starts slow, but everything else is just amazing about this movie. The first hour just builds up the tension for the rest of the movie to unfold. And unlike many horror movies, it actually works, the whole thing is dripping with tension. The cast is very good and they have the most realistic acting I’ve seen in a zombie movie so far, as well as the dialogues which are solid at all times. The characters actually act like humans. There are some characters with stupid behaviors but still their reactions are believably realistic. In the world of zombie movies this is as rare as Jennifer Lopez being humble..
It’s the most gory and graphic of the serie, with some scenes that look so realistic it's uncanny. Especially in the end, we get some alive decapitations which lasts until after the poor dying men are completely torn apart. Very gruesome and a must-see for any gore fan.
There are also some other very interesting and funny elements as well. Dr Frankenstein as a totally crazed scientist experimenting on zombies, some of them being kept partially alive, is most entertaining. As well as Bob, the rehabilitated zombie. Can't help but feel sympathy for the poor zombie. Now talk about some originality. It took Romero to think about such a concept.
