The slumber party massacre
Rita Mae Brown (1982, USA)
Cast: Michelle Michaels, Robin Stille, Micheal Villella, Debra Deliso, Andree Honore
Plot:
An eighteen-year-old high school girl is left at home by her parents and she decides to have a slumber party. There is friction between some of the invited guests and the new girl, who is better at basketball than they, so the new girl decides to stay at home (which is conveniently across the street from the host's house). Meanwhile, a convicted murderer of five has escaped and is at large, and eventually makes his way to the party, where the guests begin experiencing an attrition problem, with only the new girl to help them.
Appreciation: 8/10
I had read about this one (which gave me the idea of seeing it in the first place) on another horror critics website (sorry, can’t remember which it was), telling how bad it was and all. And I must say, it is indeed bad. I mean ridiculously bad.
First, the premises of the whole movie, the psycho-killer’s weapon of choice: a drill (!). For gods-sake, I can’t even think of a less effective way of killing people than with a drill, especially if the said drill is 2 feet long, how the hell are you supposed to aim this at anything moving?? Of course, for the sake of making things simpler, the characters mostly just stand there screaming, waiting for their turn to get killed (typical).
Second, as I had read in the other critics, the villain is as little menacing as you can imagine them. Frankly, I could make a more menacing villain. No kidding. Ok he seems a bit crazy, but he just looks like an everyday poorly dressed guy (tight jeans with a jean coat) hanging around with his drill for no reason. And to top it all, he runs away the moment he encounters someone (a girl! (no offense girls)) with a weapon (a machette, not even a gun!). Ok a machette is more maniable than a 2 feet drill, but hey guys, the villain is supposed to be the one running after people and doing the killing!. I must say that one was so hilarious I could hardly believe it.
Third, was there a plot I saw in there.. hmm.. nah didn’t think so..
Something worth noting as strange is the fact that we know from the start who the killer is. Even more strange that the movie was made by a women, you could think there would be some kind of original PoV on the subject, but unfortunately there isn’t much.
Unsurprisingly, it contains all the clichés of 80s slashers movies: tons of totally gratuitous nudity, some gratuitous fake scares, some gore, bad acting, a shitload of surrealistically stupid characters, and you know from the start who’s gonna make it and who’s not.
But in the end we can never get tired of that recipe, can we? :)
The whole thing stank so much with cheesyness that it was actually good.
Other suggestions: Halloween series (minus episode 3)
